Why can't I get a dimension between these two points?

I'm trying to measure the distance between the centers of two circles and it says "Dimensions must be between two different geometries." What can I do to get the measurement I need?

What steps are you taking to perform the measurement?

i selected "dimension", clicked the first point, and then clicked the second

That ought to work as long as at least one of the points is in the current sketch. In fact it's currently the only way to measure. If both are outside the sketch it won't work but the error that I get is different from the one you mention "A dimension cannot be created between these items" so I'm curious to know what your exact scenario is. Are you able to share your document, or a simpler example, with me?

Note: if one of the points is not only outside the sketch but off the sketch plane then the dimension will show the distance to the position of the point when projected onto the plane, not the 3d distance.

Okay I think I got it - for some reason it wasn't recognizing one of them as a point so i created a point and placed it over that one, and that worked. Thanks
