I'm new to Onshape and just wondering is it as good as Solidworks and is the program used by machines in the manufacturing process?

it is probably not as powerful as solidworks, but it is strong enough to create complex models that can be used for eg. in 3d printing.
To get an idea of how strong this program is, look up "Porsche" in the documents tab.
