Can anyone help me with my electric motor concept?

Okay so my motor concept involves two vortexes that are in the center of a torus. Also I'm trying to make this with a proportion of phi. So I started with the vortex. I created the proportions on a flat surface. Which looks like a vortex. But to extrude the object only make it in a flat surface. I need to have offsets to the proportions that I set out. But when I draw a line from the flat dimension to a 3d dimension. The lines stay in the flat plain. Nothing can be highlight for exact measurements a well.
