How can I create a 3D point by specifying x, y, z location?

I would like to create a 3D point in space by entering in the point's x,y,z location. Does anyone know how I might add 3D points in space? Perhaps I can do this with a script? I haven't seen anyway to create points, other than sketch points fixed to the current sketch plane. This seems like a fundamental feature in any CAD system. Am I just missing something?
