Can Fill Pattern be used on a curved surface?

I am teaching high school students and I want them to be able to use fill pattern on a curved surface - like you would see on a kitchen strainer/colander.  Is this possible?  I have used fill pattern on flat objects but have had no success on the curved surface

Currently, fill pattern will only work on planar faces, but you can work around this by instead using a curve pattern with a curve projected onto the surface in question. See my example below. Specifically, this example uses my modified version of the Curve Pattern FS that adds the ability to specify a reference normal surface. That way everything points where it should instead of according to the curve. The example also makes use of the Tangent Plane FS by Lou Gallo.
