How do I attach two poles/sticks to form a tripod?

I'm completely new to CAD design and want to do a simple thing for a school project. it involves two tripods with a beam running across their tops. How do I attach the poles/sticks at custom places to each other at an angle?

Glad you're interested in learning CAD. In CAD everything starts as a sketch and becomes solid using an extrude, a revolve, or something more complicated (sweep, loft, etc). I've put together something basic that I think meets your parameters so you can see how to get started. Feel free to copy the document, then you can double click on any of the features to see their inputs/parameters and understand how I made the model.
