Sketch: selecting a line which is 'under' a construction line

I keep having problems with this. I use construction lines to build geometry and reference points, trim my construction as required and end up with bits line which I cannot select as they act as 'under' the construction lines, so when I attempt any operation on the lines, it ends up applying the operation to the 'overlaying' construction line, which I don't want, and can't see any way around.
Is there a selection technique to step through 'overlaying' entities in a sketch to get at the one you need? I've tried shift keys etc and had no joy.
