How do you integrate shapes "as a whole" especially abutting surfaces, creating continuous geometry?

The sketches look like the shapes are integrated, but when it comes to printing a model, they are not attached especially abutting surfaces and corners.  I'm sure I'm missing an easy step but not sure which step. The printer operator said:  "It's not sufficient to put 2 shapes next to each other to form a corner."  I'm really new to this.  Thanks.

    Cathy,

Can you make your document public and share the link here?
