How do i extrude a hole in a plate?

Trying to extrude a hole cut in a plate and having no luck. Help is appreciated. Thanks

The trick is to use the "extrude" feature with the "remove" option selected. Here I have created a plate with a simple rectangular extrude, then sketched a circle on one of its faces and am using extrude->remove to cut the hole in the plate:
