My class is building various rides for a prototype of a theme park. One of the students is trying to build a space ship. How do we make supports to hold up the second level of the ship?

Your question is rather vague and open ended. What kind of geometry are you trying to create? Depending on the desired end product, you could use something as simple as a single extrude. For more complex geometry, including realistic beam cross sections, you could use the Neil Cooke's Beams FeatureScript. As is often the case with CAD, there are many potential solutions.
