Can't select the right axis for my circular pattern in assembly

Hi,
Beginner here and first question on the forum, hope I give enough info.
I'm trying to use circular pattern in my assembly, I simply want the middle to be the axis but it won't let me select a face, just edges.
I'm sure there is a simple solution, I just don't seem to be able to figure it out.

Create a mate connector in the center of the square gray plate. Use that for your circular pattern5
