Selecting the correct mate connector axis

Sometimes I have a problem selecting the correct axis on a mate connector? Once you have your connector location, can you pick X, Y, or Z axis? Sometimes it just works fine, and other times it is a major challenge correct axis to lock on.

even if the axis is not the same you can always flip between 4 options and also use the offset to rotate the mate over any axis at any angle and translate, have you tried this ?0

Thanks - The problem is - sometimes it might default to X axis, and I want a mate to that spot, but on the Z axis, and I can't seem to change it. The other issue is that the connector triad is so small I can't see it clearly. Lastly - sometimes I have a 'Spotty' internet connection, so that doesn't help.1

It would be nice hover then just key R, G or B for it change to the one selected as prime axis.
