How can I pattern this particular shape as such:

I know how to draw the "figure eight" shape, but I don't really know how to get this to pattern in such a way as seen above. Any help would be much appreciated.

  Model just the smallest segment (like the green rectangle below) of it you can and use Linear Pattern.
