Adding hole to side of cylinder

dave_schratdave_schrat Member Posts: 19 ✭✭
The only way I can add a hole to the side of a cylinder is to create plane and “attach” the hole to it.  Then, when the cylinder is moved the hole does not move with the cylinder.

Is there another way to add a hole to the side of a cylinder?

I have spent a lot of time looking for a solution.  Previously posted another question under “Newbie looking for Structure” with no responses.  Now I am trying to simplify my question.  With all the things Onshape can do this seems like it should be simple.  Am I asking to much?

Thanks for the response.  Not sure my brain is designed to work with Onshape.  Before I looked at your example, I projected the sides of the cylinder.  Which did move the hole location with diameter change and moving the cylinder. The hole location did not move with change in cylinder height.  Then I looked at your example.  When projecting the top and bottom as you did, hole location changes with all dimension changes.  For reasons that do not make sense to me, projecting the sides has different constrains than projecting the top and bottom.

I’m putting a point in my original sketch to orientate the Point Plane and eliminating one of the sketches.

    Thanks again.

    Hi @wayne_smith059

The "Use" command is a sketch command, so it is only in the toolbar while you are sketching.  Here is what it looks like and how to use it:
