If there are mates to a subassembly, what is the best way to find them?

If I mate a component to another component in an assembly, I can show the mates to that component by hiding all mates, then selecting the component and right clicking show mates.  The mates show up in the graphics window, but also are bolded in the tree.  If I mate components of a subassembly to components in the top level, that does not seem to work.  Is there a better way?
