How do you get a spring to expand or contract in an assembly tab?

I have to incorporate an extension spring into one of my assemblies but I can't get the spring to stretch when I mate it to two other objects.

I don't think you can directly have the spring geometry change from being mated with other objects. But you can use configurations and create different versions, an expanded and contracted position for example.
