How can you assign Part dimensions used in an assembly to a variable ?

I can use a part in an assembly that can have a different lengths.
I would like to measure the length , feature script possibly?, assign it to a variable which can then be used to
generate a resized sketch or possibly generate a new set of 8020 parts using the 8020 feature script.

@hugh_wallace Based on your workflow, you want to create a variable that is globally accessible across the document, perhaps multiple documents? Global variables?Lou Gallo
