Ball Joint Subassembly

I have a simlpe ball joint assembly, i mated the two pieces together. So far everything as expected:

Now when I use this assembly in a parent assembly, i can freely move the individual parts. This is not what i want, how to handle this correctly?

Don't mate them to the origin. The origin doesn't "exist" in a higher level assembly. Just mate them to each other, there is also no need to create explicit mate connectors for this, you just need to re-align them so the z axis in the direction of the opening (as it allows rotation along Z):
