parts with variable parameters for use in assemblies

Hi all,
I was wondering if there is a way to "lock" a variable in a part somehow and then to create another part with a different value for that same variable?
The reason is I would like to use the same basic part in one assembly but use different lengths for instance. Every time you change the variable in the part studio, the part in the assembly follows suit.
Is this possible or are we going to need a feature script for this?

The bird's-eye view of it is that normal variables are an internal part of a design's definition, while configs are an external input. You as the author can, of course, change the internals. But an external consumer can only change the configs.0

This where it gets fun - You can configure your variable values in the configuration tables, and there is almost no limit as to what you can end up with.
