The problem is in your second end position. The face you have selected is the same face you're sketching on and would result in a zero thickness extrusion. Switch the "Up to face" selection… (View Post)1 -

The confusion might be coming from the fact that you want to attach the nut to the face of whatever flat part the nut will snug up against, not the bolt. (View Post)1 -
