Designing a boat propeller in OnShape
I want to design a boat propeller using OnShape. I have a physical 9.25 inch propeller from an outboard to use as a guide for measurements. I want to start design from the center and move outward. The center of the prop has hub with beveled splines - 10 splines total. The outside of the splined hub is 20.5 mm, the inside of… -
Where are the text formatting tools? Alignment, etc?
I've been messing with the text tool, it seems extremely limited. Anyone know if it is possible to vertically align text like this? If I hit enter after each character, I can get it to stack , but then the alignment is not centered (i.e. each letter is left aligned). And the only way to adjust the height is to actually… -
Re: Best way to add a hole pattern to a round sheet metal part?
Hard to say. When i try to dimension the slots on a cylinder it says 180 degrees, rather than the width of the slot, so i assume it is slightly off. So i do a line to point dimension and it comes out good for the drawing, so i don't care. The fact it isn't absolutely perfect does bother me, but that is so mild i doubt you… -
Re: Engraving a pattern on a flat surface
@timrice Woops. Sorry about that. I ran out of storage capacity and deleted it but I've recreated it: https://cad.onshape.com/documents/765b1ea37e85f9b4d443bdb2/w/93ad14ba399cf5a3e72bf700/e/e562b8acc740c622f337cd41 I experimented a bit and confirmed that the problem occurs if the width of the "engraving" profile is too… -
Re: What is the "proper" way to design a multi piece design with intertwined constraints
With the state of the system now, I can see two approaches: 1. Just make a Variable Studio and keep all relevant dimensions there. Changing a variable in there propagates the change to all Part Studios and Assemblies in the workspace. 2. The more Onshapey way: the top-level consumer is the Assembly, so it makes sense to… -
Re: Pushing the sheet metal envelope....
ExactFlat has an online browser version outside of Onshape, to test things on. For a brute force 90 degree twisted metal strip, built by blending the edges in 3D with curves then using those to make a surface twist, Rhino will "unroll" it with a few percent area error being reported but it wonderfully results in a thinner… -
Re: Center odds or evens linear pattern on face
I don't know of an easy way to automatically center even numbered linear patterns, but if you just change your math around a little bit, you can do it: Here's a copy of your model where I've made the math run from the length and width, instead of number of holes. Right now I have it set up that the bordas are minimum… -
Re: Defining variables and prompts
Unfortunately, the workflow you describe is not possible in a custom feature. Custom features have parameters as inputs, but everything inside the feature (subfeatures, sketches, sketch dimensions) will not be editable after the fact except through those parameters. You can have a length parameter that controls the sketch… -
Re: Extrusion
Thanks Andrew, I have watched that video a few times and still can't work out how you're meant to tell from the dimensions in the last shot that the sketch has mirror symmetry. But maybe that's not important... In my original question, I mean that I drew a rectangle then dimensioned the length and width. The lines remain… -
Re: How can I display a grid when I am drawing an sketch?
It took me a while to find that feature script. Sorry. There appear to be unaccessible copies out there, including the one in the document linked earlier. It does in fact someting quite like described, and it could maybe be put to some use, though I am afraid it is but a workaround for a proper grid. A grid would center on…
