Re: can a feature read a version number?
I think @tim_hess427 and @Evan_Reese are onto something here. Expecting the human to do a mechanical click-based action every time before printing/manufacturing is the opposite of what we expect from automation. It is hugely beneficial to automatically embed a git hash and clean/dirty descriptor in any program which gets… -
Re: pattern in a cloud of points (around 2K/3K points or more)
I am trying to fill up the geometry with a lattice, something like the infills from 3D printing, controlling the angle between the internal structure and the principal axis of the cylinder, when the angle is 0 and 45 as you mention, I create one slice and then use a linear pattern to create the 3rd dimension. the issue is… -
Re: Learning OnShape
I'd start with a sketch: on a napkin, piece of paper or a white board with multi-color. Capture overall size, part count & critical dimensions. In OS you'll need to decide: •bottom up design •part studio •top down design I figure you'll probably go with a part studio as this is the 1st level in OS. This means all your… -
Re: Using part studio sketches in Assemblies
@brucebartlett @billy2 I work this way also (Reference model in a parent Part Studio ("Skeleton" or "Master Model" or just "MM"). Then that is derived as the first feature in all child Part Studios. Developed this way of working over a long time in SolidWorks but Onshape's feature set make it better in many ways. However,… -
Re: Looking for modeling technique suggestion: Sweeping a variable profile using 2 different sweep paths
I am doing fit interface checking with PLA and intend to try clear PETG for the end product. My real problem is that my 3D printer is too small to print the full size part. I isolated the critical interface feature(s) and "pie" cut the model in 3rds and glued them together to complete the fit check. I am glad I did because… -
Re: Newbie looking for structure.
In branch “Main 2 click”: Change the extrude length in the “Lower” studio. Then in the Assembly you have to click update in context 2 times for the proper results. I wish it worked like in the “Derived” branch. Updates instantly and automatically. But, this method creates to many redundant parts and this is not way Onshape… -
Re: BOM Items
@GWS50 - I think what Pete was alluding to is that it sounds like you might be better served using an in-context part studio. If you copy a part in a part studio, the copies will have different internal ID's, so if you insert all of them into the Assembly, Onshape has no way of knowing that they should be grouped together.… -
Re: Suggestion for iPad and iPhone
One million upvotes to @BruceBartlett. Before I start work in CAD, I almost always sketch out a concept on paper: being able to integrate this more directly into my CAD workflow/keep data together would be huge. Some thoughts/workflow proposals: * At the beginning of a design, being able to create sketches associated with… -
Re: FeatureScript: Bounding Box Sketch
@john_mcclary The reason Part Properties (like material) are not readable in FeatureScript is to ensure that changing these properties would not trigger a regeneration. Changes to properties are very common and can happen from outside the document. Generally people don't think of them as costly geometric operations, so it… -
Re: Solidworks to Onshape (working on imported file)
@nadav_oakes Like @gaby_rochino says, direct editing is your friend. You'll have to decide how much you want to convert to parametric features. You could re-build the whole thing based off your import geometry and it doesn't take that long. You're not designing, you're just clicking away. I like doing it because I can…
