AND then I went for a walk and realised a better way to implement it that's more compliant to the original Query Variables UI. So please disregard v1 and use V4 wich requires 11 small code changes/additions…

Onshape can't make good geometry out of bad geometry. There probably something upstream in the feature tree that needs cleaned up to allow you to do what you want.

For individual parts you can find the project property by right clicking the part in the part tree and going to properties… or right clicking the part studio tab and clicking properties then expand the tree and click on part. For assemblies you can right click the assembly tab go to properties or you can right click the top level assembly in the tab and go to properties
