Simulation of a weldment frame
Hi,
I'm designing a welded frame and had expected that OnShape would be able to easily run linear static simulation on the resulting part. Note that I run OnShape Pro. However, unless I'm doing something wrong, observations thus far are:
1, Simulation only works at assembly level, not part level
2. To close gaps between two parts butting up to each other (see image below) I either need to model the fillets or change the way I trim my frame elements or extend the rails for analysis purposes.
3. There seems to be no easy way of applying a load over a number of faces belonging to different parts. I can choose only one instance. This means I would have to apply a fraction of the load to each part one at a time.
Has anyone else experienced the same or have I missed something really obvious. I'm now working on trying to solve all 3 of the above by creating a single simulation-only boolean part of the weldment frame with over-extended rails and then creating an assembly from it for analysis purposes only. If this proves to be as time consuming as it sounds then I'm bailing out and going to see if I can find an FEA integrated application.
Keen to hear other's experiences.
Cheers,
Carl.
Re: Mirror-add not working-sheet metal
In this case you're in luck because there's a really easy approach. Just extrude your sketch curves straight from the sketch instead of extruding a surface to convert to sheet metal.
Re: Bravo Render studio
I'm glad the changes are noticeable. We have put considerable focus on these areas for some time now and often it's not one single thing that makes the difference but rather the accumulation of all of the improvements over time. We've definitely been paying attention to all of the feedback we've seen.
Obviously these types of changes are not particularly flashy and don't get the full video treatment in the "Improvements to Onshape" posts but I'm guessing for the day-to-day usage of Render Studio they are just as appealing. There is definitely more to do in this area but its great to know that it makes a difference.
Re: Need help extracting my Drawings microversionID
Weirdly microversionId is not in the "supported" listed for element right panel:
https://onshape-public.github.io/docs/app-dev/extensions/#element-right-panel
But maybe put in an improvement request for it to be supported.
Until then, if you just need the current microversion, you can get it with this endpoint:

Re: Should complicated geometry for a single profile be sketched in multiple sketches
I posted this a few days ago but it took a while for it to get through moderation. In the end I did separate the different parts of this one solid into separate sketches. There is one sketch for the pallet profile, one sketch for the head profile, and then a sketch that brings those two together and completes the rest of the pallet fork geometry. I also made a master elevation sketch that shows how all the parts go together, and referenced that sketch when extruding all the parts. I found moving everything into separate part studios improved rendering time quite a bit. It was never that bad but it was starting to slow down a touch toward the end.
If I were doing it again, I would take an even more top-down approach. But this worked out okay and the assembly seems to go together properly.
Re: Should complicated geometry for a single profile be sketched in multiple sketches
remember you can also give different colors to the sketches which may help in readability of the combined sketches
Re: Aluminium frame for a camper
Here's a wacky idea, and I'm not 100% clear on your goal, so maybe it will do what you want, but maybe not. One of the first features I ever wrote was Wireframe, which you can use to convert your solid body to something more like a bunch of extrusions, and from that you could convert faces to sheet metal. Am I close? Here's my copy of your model.

That doc has two part studios showing different ways.

API Limits
We have just had an email telling us we have exceeded our limit of API requests, and we need to buy more. When looking at the limits, it is a mere 20000 per year per company! We have 5 users, so that is 4000 per user. We have multiple programs for exporting, renaming documents and parts, downloading, etc, for our workflows. This creates multiple requests for every drawing, so we will run out in about 2 weeks.
This limit looks to have been put in place about 3 days ago!
