Simulation of a weldment frame
Hi,
I'm designing a welded frame and had expected that OnShape would be able to easily run linear static simulation on the resulting part. Note that I run OnShape Pro. However, unless I'm doing something wrong, observations thus far are:
1, Simulation only works at assembly level, not part level
2. To close gaps between two parts butting up to each other (see image below) I either need to model the fillets or change the way I trim my frame elements or extend the rails for analysis purposes.
3. There seems to be no easy way of applying a load over a number of faces belonging to different parts. I can choose only one instance. This means I would have to apply a fraction of the load to each part one at a time.
Has anyone else experienced the same or have I missed something really obvious. I'm now working on trying to solve all 3 of the above by creating a single simulation-only boolean part of the weldment frame with over-extended rails and then creating an assembly from it for analysis purposes only. If this proves to be as time consuming as it sounds then I'm bailing out and going to see if I can find an FEA integrated application.

You can only select the faces of one instance to load. That is why the second face is red in the feature dialog.
What you could do is to do a Boolean Union to merge the parts in one part. Or you make two loads for each part.
