Re: Toggle selection behavior from multiple to regular Single select
New to OnShape, and this "Multi Select" choice is one of the toughest habits to learn, especially since it's opposite to almost all other software I've ever used. Has there been any change to the decision of making this a Preference Setting?
I'm a bit baffled by this stubbornness of "our way is the only way" instead of letting users customize it to their preferences and workflow. It's great having a default experience in mind from the UI design team, but if the user wants to change it, why not let them? It's a tool many of us have to use every single day during our work.
Re: Add variables using checkboxes
If you've not referenced my Youtube video on the topic give it a watch. Now that Variable Studios are rolled out, that might be a better way to get what you're after. Assuming you want to get it with a feature still though, here's an example.
Use generated Part Number and Rev in features (text) - please help formulate a good feature request
So I'm trying to push to add (engrave) the part number on a selection of parts we push out to manufacture. For this the easiest way in my view is to add the part number directly on the 3D data (extrude-remove a text sketch)
What I think I want is to open a sketch, add a text box and use the property "part number" and "revision" so it automatically updates whenever that changes (which happens even for the part number, for example in confogured parts). At least this is how I did it in other CAD softwares (Inventor, SW).
I would like to avoid featurescrips (even though we use a lot of those that are freely available for other things), as it's not possible to have the script update the text without re-running the feature and we're bound to forget to do that all the time before release.
We're using Onshape's part number generation so there's no need to generate anything, "just"make the "part number" property available.
Doest this make sense, am I missing something ? Just want to avoid the XY problem when posting a feature request !

Re: Toggle selection behavior from multiple to regular Single select
We don't care if it is onshape standard. You can justify it however you want but it's bad design. It is the inverse of the vast majority of other software and for those of us who have to work in any other program throughout the course of the day it simply sucks. Most especially for those of us using different 3D modeling software.
You have a lot of users who don't care about consistency between different device types. Furthermore, with any model that has a long tree, it is simply too easy to leave something selected by accident.
Your desire to save money with your engineering team makes life hard for the rest of us. Listen to your users.

Re: Can someone explain new box()?
oooh! Thanks Ilya, that made it click. Lots of possibilities.
Re: Improvements to Onshape - November 22nd, 2024
- This is implemented in C++. FeatureScript isn't great for heavy computation. @Michael_Lauer, an Onshape founder, is the lead developer on this, BTW.
- Maybe? What parameters would you like to tweak?
- The method is not physics-based, so it's not simulating a real material. The primary goal is a robust approximate solution in reasonable time. We've done internal comparison against other CAD systems on performance and distortion and our method does well. But for physical accuracy and specific material properties, you have to go to a specialized simulation/analysis package.
Re: Projecting a solid or surface onto someting else
The link created from an "enterprise" subscription, if you replace the "JPS" in the jps.onshapte.com at the beginning with "CAD" it works:

Re: LiveWorx ???
So what you are saying is we need to have an online user group meeting to catch up with everyone.
Re: Improvements to Onshape - November 22nd, 2024
@ilya_baran Thanks for sharing that. It's fascinating to see the background for new functionality like this.
- Was this implemented in FeatureScript or something else?
- Will it be possible to tweak any of the parameters in the future?
- Has it been benchmarked against any of the other tools out there for accuracy in real materials?

Re: Rotating and panning parts with Macbook trackpad
- Ctrl or optipn + Two-finger click+drag in chrome just brings up the context menu and does nothing else.
- One finger click and drag selects fine. No modifier keys have any effect on it - except control, which makes it launch the context menu.
- Zooming works fine (two-finger drag). No modifier keys have any effect on it.
So I have no way to pan, and no way to rotate with the track pad.
Rotation I can at least do with on-screen controls for, but for panning there aren't even any scroll bars - I have to resort to zooming out and then into my area of interest.
This is beyond silly.
