Why can't I delete imported data?

Why do you have to keep the original imported files under "Cad import" tab? If i delete the stp file the model disappears from the part studio. Just seems odd to have to keep all the imported file tabs.
I also have an older model that was not affected when i deleted the "Cad import" data. Did something change recently?

This is a recent improvement. It allows you to "update" the imported file and keep your Onshape document parametric.
They need the original imported file for comparison reasons I assume, in order to maintain internal IDs
