Is there a way to change fundamental plains from the beginning of a construction at a later phase?

Up to now I were not able to fully understand why there are always the newer parts disappear when you go into a sketch of a former part. I guess it makes sense but I just not get it, and it makes things often difficult.
In my actual Problem I would need to change a fundamental plain with the help of newer points. But this is not possible, is it?
Thanks a lot in advance!
