Create Composite Part When Importing Non-solid Body?

What does "Create a composite part when importing multiple or non-solid bodies" mean in the context of an STL surface mesh?
This option does not appear to have any effect whatsoever. It does not create a composite part, nor does the imported mesh seem to be any different than if this option were not selected. What is the intent of this option?
Perhaps it would be useful if there was a feature to Enclose an imported mesh.
