Can I use a variable in the quantity field of a circular pattern ?

I have a sketch, and am using a circular pattern.  I have diameter variable for the size of the ring.   Depending on the size of the ring I may want to increase/decrease the count of the pillars on it. 

I have created a variable name #Num_Bars as a number but it will not accept it.

    Not possible. This should be done using a feature pattern.
