Drawing Symmetricla pattern around a sphere

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could point me in direction to draw a "wavy" pattern along the perimeter of a sphere.

Here is snapshot of what I'm doing, basic shapes with similar patterns on face of object:

So in the same way I modeled the pyramid and cube "wavy" lines I'd like to do a similar thing along a sphere.

This is what I have so far using the above techniques from john_mcclary. As you can see it gets a little ugly towards either end of the sphere.

Here is a similar approach:

• Transform rotate new the wavy surface
• Split face the face of the sphere
• Thicken the portion of the face that you split
• Circular pattern the thickened part
