Scripted Model Comparison

Can someone please guide me to a good starting point for a script that would compare two extremely similar shapes/models and highlight or change the color of surfaces around vertices that do not match within some given tolerance? Ideally, one would be able to use this to compare either similar shapes or a shape and its negative within a given boundary. The idea here is to check models over time or through various conversions and designers to ensure that accidental boolean's or other alterations did not happen.
