Problem with Injection Mold Features: Can't create Mold Parting Surface

Hi all, I am sure you can tell I'm new to this and I am having
problems getting a mold parting surface to work properly in this
document:
The
problem seems to be centered around the crank arm as there are vertical
surfaces there, however I don't understand why this appears to be a
problem. When I create a parting surface it won't extrude properly and I
can't edit edges to make it work... I don't think the geometry is too
complex and in theory creating a mold for this should work I believe.
Any help on how to solve this is greatly appreciated, thanks
