Transfer ownership to free users for private backup

I do consulting work, so I need to transfer document ownership to the client at the end of a project.
Normally I would send copies of the files to the client even if they don't use CAD themselves.
In this way they can share the files with future technical folk if needed to make use of the files.
In OnShape, I can to transfer ownership to free users but it makes documents public.
Many clients would not be comfortable with this arrangement.
There doesn't seem to be a workaround via local backup / restore either.
Is there someway to handle this use case?
Ideally there would be an option to transfer as private but read only for free users.
