how would I go about making this kind of feature in sheet metal?

Create the sheet flattened, add the tab cutout, bend the outer face up.
That's indeed what I used, but it also bended the "tab".
I couldnt find a way to bend the sheet, and leave the tab in the same plane.
Can you share an example?
