Newbie Q: How do I use a profile to Sweep along a path, if they are on different planes?

Hello
How can use a profile (e.g. A.) to Sweep along a path (e.g. B.) if they are on different planes?
Do I need to create a new plane? If so how do I do it?
No doubt there is a video on this but I can work out which to watch!
[Aside: I am finding many of the videos fail to show you how to start from nothing...)
Apologies for dumb question.
Many thanks

Planes can be created from icon which look like a plane and says plane on tooltip (modeling screen, not in sketch mode)
