How to easily make a curve 3d

I am trying to model a lattice structure, but I am having trouble connecting the spheres.
I have created some curves in places where I want them, but I can't find any easy way to make them 3d. I tried using sweep, but that took a very long time, and the result was not quite right. The thicken tool doesn't seem to work on this sort of thing.

It looks like you just want straight "rods" connecting the spheres?
I would look at using the frame tool with a custom profile for this. If you have points in the center of your spheres you should even be able to make them go "point to point" without need to create a curve, which should save time.
