Step excercise

kenneth_croftkenneth_croft Member Posts: 11

Someone else has asked this question and did not get a useful reply so here it is again in my words.

In the Step exercise once a rib has been created in the cavity under the step, the rib needs to have Draft added.. To do this, the top surface of the rib has to be selected. I can select the edges and the side faces but I cannot select the top. I have restarted the complete exercise 3 times now with the same result even though I closely follow every instruction. This in itself is not important because in the menu when creating the rib, there is a draft option, so draft can be added from the start. But more importantly, to add more ribs, the top surface of the rib has to be selected and I still cannot do that. I got round this by creating a new plane at the top of the rib by dimensioning from the base of the rib. But I still want to know why I cannot select the top surface of the rib. Is there a fault in the exercise.

Maybe link to your document? The top has to be selected as the Neutral plane. As long as that's a planar face, you should be able to select it. Here is the step up to Step 16.

I know the top of the web has to be selected as a neutral plane but I cannot select it and this now is my 5th attempt. Here is the document and I have set it to be shared with you. I don't know how you get access to the document but it is the last one opened by me today. I do not know how to give you a link to it. The document is called "Final 5th attempt and stuck on neutral surface". I can get no further because I cannot select the top surface f the web. I know that I can make a draft at the time I create the web, but that is not the point.

You need to make your document public and then paste the URL into your comment.

@kenneth_croft If you are having trouble figuring how to share a public document, check out this link:

How do I select the top of the webs as a plane for the next sketch. All I can do is select the edges of the top of the web.

    The public drawing is here:

Oh wow, I see it now. I totally understand how this was confusing. When you're tying to select the top of a rib as a sketch plane, Sketch 1 is in the way. With it visible, your mouse just wants to select Skeetch 1 and ignores underlying geometry. Two solutions, both visible in the animation below. 1) Hide Sketch 1 or 2) use the "Select Other" tool.

Many many thanks. This solved the problem for me and gives me a clue what to do in future when things don't work for me.

    Thanks again.
