Add version to drawing

jeff_mcafferjeff_mcaffer Member Posts: 64 ✭✭

Is there a way to add the name of the current version (or Main) to a drawing? I see the ability to add various properties in a Note (and "revision" looks really attractive) but none of them look like the versioning info. People never remember to update the revision manually but they do version for sharing.

Alternatively, a poor cousin of this would be to have a "last updated" timestamp. There is a last updated date but when you iterate many times in the same day it gets confusing.

Versions are just a convenient timestamp and not a real revision/version so the values cannot be used on drawings.

I'm noy able to check at the moment, but is the last updated property not a timestamp? Do you not just need to set the format to show hours etc?

@NeilCooke I'm not quite sure what you mean. From a user point of view, versions are "a thing". They are something that folks talk about, collaborate on, manage etc.

When you create a version, you are warned to update out of data drawings, so it seems that versioning captures drawings. So if I give you a stack of drawings it would be great if you could find out what "version" they are from.

In the end I really just want to be able to create a partial ordering, that is, tell if this copy of Drawing 1 was created before or after this other copy of Drawing 1. Last changed date works if drawings only change once a day. Last changed time would be better.

@Oliver_Couch Unfortunately the only related option I see in the Note UI is "Drawing last changed date" and it does appear as a date in the drawing. I'm not sure where I'd change the format if it is in fact a timestamp. Perhaps there's another place to look?

Sorry, I've just had the chance to check. I was thinking of some different software that gives you the option to do custom time string formatting using the strftime() syntax: https://www.strfti.me/

It would be nice if we could do this actually.

OK. Seems like there is no such support. I've added an improvement request. See (and vote for :-) Add document version to drawing — Onshape

    Thanks all for chiming in.
