architectural scale and importing

robert_grosofrobert_grosof Member Posts: 5

Hi,

new user. How do you create an architectural scale on a drawing? I was able to import a dwr image and a pdf…but how do you copy it into a final drawing? Fyi, I am building a 4 season room and want to create a plan view & elevations (that use uploaded window architecturals). thx

Can you please elaborate on what exactly you want to achieve and maybe supply a sample?

I'm not certain wether you want to just add a detail like a scaled ruler to your drawing layout or if it is about the actual scale of the drawing. Also, what does this dwr import contain? This all reads like you maybe want to (mis)use an Onshape drawing tab as a layout program or the like. I may be wrong, though.

The standard way would be to insert all your imported things into a part studio tab (e.g. the windows, walls, …), assemble everything in an assembly tab and then have Onshape automatically create the drawing off the 3D-Model, complete with plan view, elevations and in whatever scale you wish.

    Hi Martin,

Thx for responding. I have done hard line drafting in the past & have basic knowledge of Autocad LT. I have 2 basic inquiries:

    1. I selected an Ansi D size drawing tab and wanted to create a floor plan for a 4 season room. So size D is 24 x 36 in. I want to draw a plan view at 1/4 in = 1ft or 1/2 in = 1 ft Can this be done?
    2. I also want to draw an elevation view with imported window jpg, or dwr formats. These would be placed within the elevation drawing. Can this be done? I am not creating a part or tool, just basic drafting.

    3. I know OnShape is touted for free CAD, especially for part design. Should I find another Cad product?

does the suggestion need to be free? or does low cost work?

A 2D drawing in Onshape is really just "views" of a 3D design so you definitely wouldn't "draft" in a drawing. You will need to forget pretty much everything you know about AutoCAD…
Basically you draw your house in the 3D environment (at 1:1 scale) and then create view in your drawing at the appropriate scale.

If you are just doing a floor plan, you could create it using 2D sketches in a part studio and probably create just a simple flat "surface" representing the end result to import in the drawing, definitely possible but a little bit convoluted.

That said if you are just looking for "basic drafting" in 2D, Onshape might not be the best option…
