Is it possible to use a variable to change the length of an object that's being patterned?

I'm trying to create a circular pattern of a series of tubes. I want the tubes to get progressively smaller (~10 inches to `3 inches).
As is, I'm going to just pattern them normally and then go in and extrude remove the lengths I don't want. Anyone have an easier way to do this?
