Dumb Question: how do you create a point on a surface

Suppose i have a non-planar surface, such as one created from a loft or sweet. How do i create a point on that surface?
Of course there isn't a way to create a point without a sketch. So then, i tried to create a plane, and then create a co-incident constraint between a point and the surface-- but that didnt work either.
I feel like i am missing something really obvious.
