keyway parallel to taper

I am trying to create a keyway in a taper shaft. The key is parallel to the taper and I am trying to create a plane that is on the shaft but am having a difficult time with this. I am very rusty on my Mcad skills, SW 2004 was what I was using last.

Rather than trying to create the key looking down in plan view, create the section profile of the key by sketching on a plane that goes through the shaft axis. You can use the "Use" command in the sketch to get the silhouette edge of the taper, then extrude/remove. You can add fillets to the keyway after. Make sense?
