Standard Steel Profiles ?

gary_hancockgary_hancock Member Posts: 1
I often employ standard steel / aluminum profiles while designing assemblies. I am currently reviewing OS as a CAD platform to transition my team into and this would be a great tool / APP / Feature. Importing sourced DWG line work introduces potential lack of continuity between team members and having to sketch each profile would get old really fast. Are there current tools / catalog for the provision of standard shapes / profiles ? Thanks

This will be possible when FeatureScript is available, as I understand it. You should be able to add your profile as a custom feature and select which profile to use from a drop-down menu.

In the meantime, you could create a shared project containing your sketches and copy/paste them into your projects as needed. Far from ideal, obviously, but as a stop-gap it works.

On the odd chance that you are transitioning from Alibre/GeomagicDesign, Lew Merrick has uploaded a very comprehensive set of part and component files to GrabCAD including everything from nuts, bolts, bearings to I-beams, channel, and more:

From what little I know of him, his is a bit anal retentive when it comes to stuff like this, so I expect that models are spot on so far as standards go.  It might even be worth buying a copy of GeoMagic Design and using that to convert Lew's files to ones that are better suited to Onshape.  He's a long-time consultant that seems quite conversant in various CAD programs and might be willing to convert those files to a more useful format for you, if that makes more sense.

That really depends on what you are looking for.

If they match American ones, I expect you might find some to use in Neil's Beam Feature [1] and the profiles with it.
If they match Australian profiles, you might find some in my Australian Beams feature [2].

Edit: There are also some other profile libraries around, such as @john_mcclary 's Library [3].
