Help with modeling needed

Hi all,
Im trying to model a locking mechanism, similar to an image below. Im pretty good with Rhino and modo, but my solidworks/Onshape skills are not that great. I can't figure out how to approach this shape. I know the basic tools and so on, but I can't imagine how to do this kind of shapes. Image two it a simple shape I made with onshape, but I really need some help here. Would really love a good tutorial about joining mechanisms
thank you,
Hannes

Let me know if you have any questions. You can probably cut down the number of features used but this is my quick crack at it.
