can i twist a surface in place while extruding it?

sorry for the noob question, but i couldn't find the answer anywhere.
i have a simple 2D pthikness"thikness"olygon, that i want it to extrude 5 cm, but also to twist it in place a whole turn.
tried to do it with helix but no luck.
any pointers?
