How do I create a pattern of normal square holes in a cylinder along a helix path?

I would like to create a circular stair case and was wondering how I add the steps that go up and around the center post.

    Please take a look at the curve driven pattern feature here: onshape.com/featurescript

    it has an example of a spiral staircase.

    I see you've already got an elegant solution going on with the curve pattern. That's probably what I'd use too, but your question made me think of another way to do it with only native features using variables. check it out.
