shell outward and use base part together

I have a family of parts, each consists of a solid core disc shape and a coating shell on the solid core.  I want to be able to change one or two dimensions to create the family of parts, and the family will grow.  I can make the core part, then hollow outward to create the shell.  I can use versions to make an assembly of the core plus the shell.  But I lose the ability to change dimensions unless i recreate each version, and the later versions lose the core.  I could scale the assembly and parts, but then the coating thickness will scale, and that stays constant.  Any idea?

If I understand you correctly, you need use several branches of design instead of several versions in one branch

@john_mariner since we don't yet have configurations, probably best thing to do would be to duplicate each part studio, or just create all the parts in one part studio with a sketch for each core.
