total wet baby text question

Hey!
So if you read the description right, I'm a total newb to most CAD applications. I'm a 3d Printing enthusiast who jumped on to try and make fidget spinners (insert exacerbated grunt here). Anyway, my work wanted me to make one with text on the different tri arms of a spinner. I'm trying to add the text as raised 1-2 mm off each arm, but every time I place text there and extrude, it adds it as a hole.
If I'm thinking this through correctly, should I be making seperate sketches, extruding each sketch seperately then adding them together? Or is there something else I should try?
Thanks in advance.
Mike

This function could have been written for you. It allows a feature to make raised text for you.
Have fun.
