Modeling an axial ("Barrel") rib-type cam

I asked this question once before the new "Curve" capabilities were added.  So, can I now model a cam like this?  How would I do it?

Wow, that's kinda what I want to do but the method is completely over my head!

While I'm very impressed with Konstantin's modeling skills, I'm finding his method difficult to follow - and to adjust to fit a precise requirement.
